A Master’s Assistantship is available in the Veterinary Entomology Laboratory of Dr. Erika Machtinger at Pennsylvania State University in State College, PA.

As house flies continually develop resistance to synthetic insecticides, alternative tools are needed. Beauveria bassiana is an entomopathogenic fungus. There are opportunities to use B. bassiana as a biopesticide for fly control on livestock facilities. The successful applicant will focus on applied research involving biopesticide development using Beauveria bassiana for house flies on poultry facilities, and will investigate use in IPM programs. The student will also be involved in Extension programming.

A strong interest or previous training in veterinary entomology, vector management, vector-host interactions is desired. A valid driver’s license, and ability to work long, and sometimes irregular hours is required. Previous undergraduate research experience a plus.

The position comes with a full tuition waiver, a competitive 12-month stipend, and health insurance. Funding for the project and conference attendance is available.
